In February 2021 Tortilla Squad, a YouTube channel dedicated to technology topics, published a video in which one of its members recounted the unusual way in which he had lost the monetization of his account. As the user explained, the channel never received any communication from the platform about a requirement to verify member accounts: a PIN that is sent by physical mail and that content creators must validate in order to continue receiving revenue from their videos.
The lack of adequate notification was compounded by the shortcomings of Correos Mexicanos, the postal service through which YouTube sends the verification codes in that country. The platform stipulates that if the PIN has not been received within four weeks, the delivery must be requested again. Only after three attempts is it possible to ask YouTube for help, so Tortilla Squad was forced to wait three months without obtaining any income for its content.
