Because of the nature of his content, which includes song appreciation, tutorials and sound engineering issues, Rick Beato was accustomed to receiving copyright claims. He was aware that he was using protected material, which is why he accepted the demonetization and blocking of his videos without filing any appeals, precisely because he knew that by objecting he could receive a strike and jeopardize his channel.

However, on February 3, 2021, after five years on YouTube and nearly 800 videos, the platform informed him that he had been hit with a strike for a video where he analyzed the reasons why The Cars' Just What I Needed was a hit. Beato expressed his frustration on both YouTube and Twitter. The next day, he was notified that a second strike had been applied to his channel for a video about Simon & Garfunkel posted two years earlier.

That same day, the youtuber took to Twitter to ask the companies behind the claims to withdraw the strike, as his work helped publicize the artists' work without taking a penny from them.

A few hours later, Beato posted a tweet thanking YouTube and Sony Music for restoring his videos and removing the copyright infringements.
